Yemen is a country located in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, in south-western Asia. Yemen is part of the Middle East and borders on Oman and Saudi Arabia. Yemen also borders on the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. Yemen’s area is 195,000 sq km. In the Indian Ocean, such islands as Abd al-Kuri, Samha and Darcy belong to Yemen. The island of Socotra, a very large island, is of particular strategic importance in the Indian Ocean because it is 300 km from the Arabian Peninsula and 240 km from Africa.

Relief. Yemen can be divided into three geographic zones: the dry coastal Tihāmah area, the mountainous plateau that covers most of the country, with a maximum height of 3,600 m (Mount Jabal an Nabī Shu‘ayb) and the desert area in the north and east of the country.

Mountains. The Yemen Mountains are located in the west and are the highest mountains in Arabia. Their average height is from 2,000 to 2,500 m above the sea level (the peak Jabal an Nabī Shu‘ayb at 3,600 m).

There is a mountain massif in the north of the city of Sana'a, which consists of two mountains, Sahhar (2,306 m) and Mafluk (2,215 m).

The Sirat Range extends in the north-west of the country.

Rivers. Rivers flowing through the territory of Yemen include the Abrad with its tributary Madab, the Mur, the May-Ain and the Hirr.

Sightseeing.

Sana’a is one of the earliest human settlements on the planet. The local people believe that the city was founded by Sim, Noah’s son, right after the Great Flood. Sana'a is the capital of Yemen.

8 km north of Sana’a lies the town of Rayda, known for its vineyards, a medieval mosque and a palace.

In the north, between the Sahhar and the Mar Ranges, lies the city of Saada (Saadda), a well-known for its ring of old fortress walls, which offer a lovely view of the whole neighbourhood. Other sights include the old gates of Najran, the Great Mosque and a traditional market.

Marib is the former capital of the Kingdom of Saba and the most exciting archaeological site in Yemen. The city of Rada is one of the most important centers in the southern province of Al-Beida.

The city of Taiz, which lies on the slopes of Mount Sabir at an altitude of 1,400 m, close to two major ocean basins, has a relatively mild climate by local standards and boasts an ancient history.

The city of Dofar is the ancient capital of the Himyarite kingdom.

Sayun is the biggest city in the valley, famous for the most beautiful mosques of Yemen, but the most exciting attraction of the city is the Sultan’s Palace (1931-1936). It is one of the most exquisite buildings of this kind in the country. The city of Tarim can compete with Sayun by the number of its mosques. The city, framed by rocks from the north and surrounded by palm groves from the south, is an important Sunni religious center.

36 km west of Sayun lies the famous city of Shibam, “Desert Manhattan”, a city of striking clay skyscrapers, the oldest ones in the world.

The city of Aden lies in the south, on the shores of the Gulf of Aden. This is another ancient city.

The Socotra Archipelago (Socotra Sabuniya, Abd al-Kuri, Kaal-Faraun and such islands as Te-Broters and El Ihvan, the total area of 3.66 sq km) lies in the waters of the Arabian Sea, 380 km south of the Yemen coast and 80 km east of Cape Gwardafuy (Somalia). The Island of Socotra is the largest island in the group (3,625 sq km).

The island of Kamaran is situated in the center of Yemen’s western coast and considered one of the quietest and picturesque places in the country.

Tourism. In Yemen, there are such resorts as Aden, Al-Hodeyda, Taiz and Sana’a.
