Kiev is the capital of the Ukraine, one of the largest industrial, scientific and cultural centres of the Ukraine, the third largest city of the CIS in terms of population (after Moscow and St. Petersburg). The city of Kiev is located at the heart of Eastern Europe, on both banks of the Dnepr, below the mouth of the left tributary of the Desna river. The population of the city is 2.6 million people.

Historical Facts. Archaeological research showed that the first urban settlements on the territory of Podol did not appear until 880. According to the traditional view, Kiev was the capital of Kievan Rus since 882. Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus wrote in the mid-10th century that Kiev had a different name, Samvatas. Probably it was either its ancient name or the name of the city used by non-Slavic nations.

Rivers. The main rivers in Kiev and the Kiev region include the Dnepr, the Pripyat, the Lybid, the Desna (the left tributary of the Dnepr), the Ross, the Trubezh, the Irpen, the Stunga, the Teterev and the Gorny Tikich.

Reservoirs. There are a large number of water reservoirs in and around Kiev: the Kiev Reservoir, Swan Lake, the Kanevskoe Reservoir and Lake Brodinskoe.

Sightseeing. In Kiev, there are many historical and architectural places of interest and other attractions. The most famous of them include the central street called Khreshchatyk Street, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, the Golden Gate, Andreevkaya Church, St. Sophia’s Cathedral, Marinsky Palace and St. Michael's Monastery.

Tourism. Kiev has such kinds of active tourism as cycling, equestrianism, walking and hiking. Major tourist centres include:

  • The Goloseevsky forest and the village of Pirogovo, a place where horse rides and hiking tours are organised;
  • The Sofiyivka Park in Uman, which is rightly considered one of the best landscape parks in Europe;
  • The Alexandria Arboretum in the town of Bila Tserkva;
  • The Gorny Tikich river, a popular place for kayaking;
  • The Khmelnytsky Oblast (Kamyanets-Podilskyi) is popular with cyclists;
  • The Desna River, which offers water trips by boat and on rafts.

Climate. The climate in Kiev is moderately continental. June, July and August are the warmest months of the year with an average temperature of 14ºC– 25ºC, while December, January and February are the coldest with an average temperature of -5ºC – 0ºC.
